The roots of Safran Vectronix reach back over 90 years to the days of Wild Heerbrugg, a Swiss company that built dual-use instruments such as rangefinders and goniometers. The company was a key supplier to the Swiss Procurement Agency (now armasuisse). In 1986 Wild Heerbrugg and Ernst Leitz merged to form the Wild Leitz Group, which later was acquired by the Leica Group. Soon after changing the name to Leica – Vectronix, the Swiss company was acquired in 2003 by Safran Electronics & Defense (Safran), a French company specialized in global defence and security business. Despite the changes in names, the company has never moved away from its location in Heerbrugg, Switzerland.
